This challenge is inspired by Comic-Con and all things geeky. To celebrate Comic-Con, which is happening this week in San Diego, I'll be doing some geek-inspired nail art along with a bunch of other bloggers. Peace Love Lacquer is hosting this one.
For today's theme, which is "inspired by a book," I chose The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I absolutely love this book (well, the entire Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide) and the work of Douglas Adams. It's the first book that came to my mind, and I also thought of some fun nail art ideas from it!
I'll try not to geek-out too hard over things this week, but if you haven't read The Hitchhiker's Guide or haven't even seen the movie, I recommend you do so! Also, if you're unfamiliar, here's what I chose to paint on my nails:
- Index: Hitchhiker's logo (it's like a thumbs up on a planet)
- Middle: the "Cosmic Cutie," a flying green circle sticking its tongue out. Douglas Adams reportedly hated it!
- Ring: "Don't Panic," which is written on the actual Hitchhiker's Guide in the story
- Pinkie: A dolphin - "So long and thanks for all the fish!"
If you're still scratching your head over the references, don't worry, it's a bit of a strange story. I hope you can appreciate the nail art either way though! If you Google "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," you'll see most of these things come up.
As for how I did it, I free handed everything! I started off by painting one coat of Essie Go Overboard for my base. I thought a dark blue would be more interesting than just black, though the story does deal with outer space a lot. I then free handed each design using nail art striping polishes in lime, silver, blue (I should have used an even lighter one!), red, white, and black.
As you can see, I'm apparently incapable of painting a perfect circle for the green Cosmic Cutie, and the words "Don't Panic" look more like dripping blood than normal text! Like I said, I've been out of the nail art loop for months now, so I'm a little rusty! Either way, I had fun doing it, and I look forward to the next themes in this challenge!
