Flip Flop February - Color Blocking

Color blocking! Another day where I was unsure of what to do. Even though I love black and white designs, color blocking seemed more fun to me. But then I couldn't decide on any good colors, or what design to do! So I just sort of winged it.

I finally got my hands on Sinful Colors Rain Storm, and I've been wanting to use it! So I finally just went for it, and tried to pick some colors that went with it. Rain Storm is sort of a subdued, dusty blue. I wanted to lighten and brighten it up a bit with a brighter blue, but also get some gray in there for the dusty side of it.

The colors don't exactly go together perfectly, but I like them. I'm thinking I should have chosen a gray that was a bit darker. I went with Sinful Colors Cool Gray and Wet n Wild I Need a Refresh-Mint for the two other colors.

I started off by painting my nails with I Need a Refresh-Mint. I used two coats, and waited for it dry completely. Since I wanted to do literal color blocking, with bit chunks of color, I then put tape on diagonally, somewhat randomly, and then painted with Rain Storm and Cool Gray around it.

Some of the paint seeped under the tape a little, so eventually I just started doing freehand lines instead of taping. The lines aren't perfect because of it, though there isn't any obvious "seepage" either. I'm thinking that maybe some striping tape to put in between the colors could have made it look a bit cleaner, and made each color pop even more!

Of course, I only thought of adding striping tape when I was completely done with it and after I took photos. I guess I'll just have to try it again but add tape next time!

  2. Hi, this is a nice example of a patchwork mani. Please see http://chloesnails.blogspot.com/2010/11/patchwork-mani-tutorial.html for her tutorial. And clicking on Patchwork Mani in her Labels column (http://chloesnails.blogspot.com/search/label/Patchwork%20Mani) will bring up the seven patchwork manis she did on her blog, inluding a St. Patrick's day design and a camo design. My personal favorite: http://chloesnails.blogspot.com/2010/12/semi-holiday-patchwork-mani.html. Thanks for reviving a favorite design!
