My first blog giveaway / 50 blog follower celebration!

Yay, we finally did it! We reached the goal of 50 blog followers via Google Friend Connect (GFC). We actually passed that, and are currently at 54! Thank you all for finding me and following me :) I hope to bring you more fun stuff in the future!

I started this blog on the 1st of April, and now it's the 30th! All of this has happened in one month, and it has been a wonderful experience so far. So this will open at midnight EST, May 1st, and will also be my one month blog anniversary celebration.

So now, it's giveaway time!
Up for grabs are three brand new Wet n Wild nail polishes. The colors are:

  • Black Creme
  • French White Creme
  • Kaleidoscope

Some rules:
  1. I am hosting this giveaway via the Rafflecopter widget below. A winner will be chosen randomly, but I will be checking to see if they actually did the tasks!
  2. Entrants must be age 18 or older.
  3. Entrants must be residents of the US (sorry, no international yet!)
  4. This giveaway is in no way associated with or endorsed by Facebook.
  5. The polishes are offered as-is: they are brand new, but if they get damaged in the mail or lost, I cannot replace them.
  6. I will contact the winner via email within 24 hours of the giveaway ending. If the winner does not respond within 24 hours, I will be selecting a new random winner. This will continue until somebody claims the prize.
  7. The giveaway will be open for one full week.
Thank you for understanding and complying with the rules!
Now for the fun part :)

Day 15: Delicate Print

Delicate print. It's a bit vague, but that's part of what makes this challenge fun! It's fun to see what your creativity will think up, and it's fun to see how other bloggers who are doing the same challenge will also interpret it.

When I thought of delicate, tiny flowers, lace, and pastel colors came to mind. I just did flowers yesterday, so why not lace? I'm not much of a pink girl, but I decided to go for a light pink to make it extra delicate.

Colors used:
  • CG Nailslicks - Tickled Pink
  • Ulta - Snow White
  • Max Makeup Cherimoya - White

I painted my nails pink, and then free-handed white tips with the normal Ulta polish. Then I did the tiny loops  with the MMC nail art polish in white. I know it's not very crazy or exciting, but I guess that will be for tomorrow's tribal nails!

Day 14: Flowers

Flower day! Another day that I was looking forward to. I have been wanting to try cherry blossoms for a while, so I went for it.

This is my second attempt at a sakura pattern, but the first since I've started this blog. I've gotten some new colors since I last tried, and I like this combination much better!

Last time I had used Revlon Minted for the background color, and Revlon Hot for Chocolate for the branches. The Revlon brown is much darker than this, and didn't look right with it. This time, I used these colors instead:
  • Essie - Da Bush
  • Sinful Colors - Nirvana
  • CG Nailslicks - Tickled Pink
  • Chelly - 72

I had a really fun time doing this pattern again! I've gotten better at free-handing and dotting since I first tried cherry blossoms, and I love it. These colors are just amazing together too. Da Bush is just the perfect jade green for me.

Day 13: Animal Print

Animal print day! I've been looking forward to this challenge. I really don't know how to describe my love for animal print. I do not really own anything that is animal print. I love zebra print, but I'm not sure I'd ever be able to pull off zebra heels or a handbag! I figured the black and white contrast would be a bit crazy, so I went for more of a tiger pattern.

It's funny how this pattern came around though. I got this huge stamping plate on Amazon quite a while ago, but never actually used it! I was looking at it and saw that there are a couple striped animal patterns. So I decided to go for it.

Big fail. I initially tried using Wet n Wild Black Creme to stamp. While it actually does go on the stamper well and then onto the nail, it dries so quick that it was completely dry before I could put it on the stamper the first time! And I was working quick.

So I gave up with the stamping. It was working okay, but lining it up perfectly wasn't going so well. So I did it on a couple nails, and then free-handed and filled in where it left off. Can you tell which fingers I stamped, which ones are half/half, and which ones I free-handed completely?

Well I did the pinky, ring finger, and thumb with the stamp. The thumb looks major fail! But the ring finger and pinky were covered quite a bit, but then I filled in the rest. Then I completely free-handed the middle and index fingers with a black nail art polish. I'm so proud of them!

In the end, I think it's a success! I'll definitely have to practice stamping. I wish the stampers were clear so I could tell where the design is going better!

And before I forget, here are the colors I used:
  • KleanColor - Neon Orange
  • Ulta - Snow White
  • Max Makeup Cherimoya - Black
  • Wet n Wild - Black Creme (the really fast drying one, apparently!)
  • Topped with Seche Vite as always!

I got my Essie polish from Cosmo!

Yup, it came! A while back, Cosmo had a sweepstakes to win a limited edition golden Essie polish through them. Here is the old link to the sweepstakes, saying it is now closed. It says it began April 10th at 12:01 AM, so I guess that's when I entered! I remember staring at the clock until it was "go time." As far as I know, 1500 lucky people will get one of these in the mail!

It came with a cute note saying:
"Congratulations! You've won the Cosmopolitan Practice Safe Sun Reader Giveaway!
Enjoy this exclusive essie shade of Cosmo's PSS Shimmer with our compliments."

The Essie is quite beautiful! It's filled with very fine gold glitter. It's funny, because I own so many glitters in silver, and a few in white or multicolor, but none in gold, so this is perfect. It is definitely shimmery, and would make a lovely topcoat or stand alone polish.

The bottom of the polish just says "Cosmo's PSS Shimmer." I guess this means "Practice Safe Sun" as the card and sweepstakes suggested! I'm really glad I was able to get one of these! I'm sure whoever was lucky enough to receive one won't be let down by it's awesomeness.

Major kudos to Cosmo and Essie for making this happen! Thank you!

Day 12: Stripes

Stripes. Horizontal? Vertical? Use striping tape? Stripe with nail art brushes? So many options! I opted to play with my nail art brushes and do some striping that way.

I'm typically not a pink girl, but pink was calling to me for some reason today. I applied one full coat of pink, and then went to town striping with my nail art polishes!

Colors I used (in order from left to right):
  • KleanColor - Pink
  • Max Makeup Cherimoya - Y3K wedding
  • Max Makeup Cherimoya - Neon Pink
  • Max Makeup Cherimoya - Barbie Pink
  • Max Makeup Cherimoya - Pink Lady

After I applied my initial full coat of pink, I started in the center of each nail and made one stripe all the way to the tip. Then I just picked up different shades of pink and kept making stripes off to one side. It's sort of like a racing stripe that's off-center the way I did it. Half of the nail is the original pink, half is all stripes!

As usual, I topped it with a coat of Seche Vite. That made it really glossy, and while it's easy to see in person, it's like glare-city in my photos! A bit subtle since they're all pink, but I figured I would save the crazy black stripes for future challenges like animal print or tribal.

April MyGlam Bag

Alright, I know this is a bit late! I've been a MyGlam subscriber since they began in December of last year. I figure I can stray a little from the polish path and review fun things like this too :) I love trying new products of any kind, so I might as well share my thoughts and experiences with my readers!

I got this Glam bag in the mail a while ago, but I haven't really gotten a chance to explore it much until now. Better late than never - but I suppose we also have a good couple weeks before May's bag comes.

April's theme: Girls' Night Out. The bag is pretty cute, being metallic pink. It's a bit thin in material compared to the previous bags, but it's still pretty nice. I'm starting to get a pile of makeup bags going from subscribing so long though! I may have to put polishes from giveaways in some and mail them out to other people.

The bag seemed a little empty upon opening, but that's because this month's items are pretty small and lightweight. As far as the contents of the bag go:

  • Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil - in Junkie (a dark green)
  • DermStore Lip Quench - Moisture Infused Lip Treatment
  • All-Belle Eyelashes
  • MyGlam All-over eyeshadow brush and eyeliner brush

I actually like what I got in my bag. I don't really have an extensive brush collection yet, so I really can't compare the quality to any other brands. I'm still learning the art of "expert" makeup application, so I don't feel comfortable enough to critique them too much! Although it is nice that they have added more brushes - last month's bag had one brush inside of a case, and now they're beginning to fill up the extra space will a full collection of brushes. I like the idea :)

The brushes are pink and have the "MyGlam" logo printed toward the end. One is a rounded eyeshadow brush, and the other is a thin angled eyeliner brush.

The UD eyepencil is pretty nice - I really have never used colored eyeliner, so it's a treat! I typically use black like most women, but the dark green is actually a very nice color. Like most UD pencils, it does indeed glide on, and the color isn't sheer at all. I'll use it!

The DermStore Lip Quench is also great. It's actually very thick inside the tube, so when I squeeze it, I'm afraid it's going to burst! Other than that, the thickness is a bit weird on my lips, but definitely adds a layer of protection and moisture. It isn't clear too, and has a very sheer yet shimmery pinkish/purple color to it. The scent is also amazing - it smells very fruity, and I keep getting a whiff of pineapple from it!

As far as the All-Belle lashes go, I have never used false lashes before! I haven't used these ones yet, but it will be an experience for me when I do. I have pretty long lashes to begin with, so it should be interesting. The box isn't in English, but I'm assuming that they are meant to be used a few times, and then discarded.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with my MyGlam bag, as usual. They've taken some turns and have gone back to more makeup after other subscribers were unpleased with February's bag and some others. I'll remain a subscriber and see what else they have to offer in the future!

If you would like to sign up to be a MyGlam subscriber, they now have a waitlist. You can go here to subscribe and be added to the waitlist, and check out this page for more information if you have any questions.

Target Beauty Bag

A while ago I signed up on the Target Style Facebook page to receive a free beauty bag. Well it finally arrived!

It came in this cute little box with Target logos made out of various beauty products.

While I know this isn't nail polish related, I do enjoy other beauty products too! After all, I am also a MyGlam subscriber. I will try to review other beauty related products, but still remain true to my love of lacquer.

The little zip-up pouch, or "beauty bag," is really pretty. It's somewhat pink and coral, and looks different under different lights. It's pretty bright, but really cute - especially for summer! I'll definitely be using this bag for makeup or other beauty needs.

I was actually sort of surprised when I opened it! It was packed with samples of various products:
  • Nivea Extended Moisture lotion (1 oz)
  • Pantene Flat to Volume conditioner (1.7 oz)
  • Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleaner (0.5 oz)
  • Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes (7 ct)
  • Loreal Paris Magic Lumi light infusing primer
  • A whole booklet of various Target beauty coupons

There was quite a bit! And the bag smells absolutely amazing after having this stuff inside of it - it smells like perfume, but nothing leaked, thankfully!

I haven't tried the stuff out yet, but I'm sure I will get some good use out of it. While I already have super thick hair, I can always use some Pantene conditioner, and I can always use lotion and make-up removing wipes.

This was such an awesome freebie from Target, and I hope to see more in the future!

Day 11: Polka Dots and Julep Review

Polka dots! Dots, dots, so many dots!

While today's challenge is Polka dots, I'm combining it with a review of Julep nail polish!

A while back, I had gotten to try Julep nail polish for 1 penny. I used both of the polishes I received in my Boho Glam box:
  • Julep - Meryl (gray)
  • Julep - Blake (yellow)

I decided to use both colors, since I thought they would look pretty together. Sort of funny that gray can be "pretty," but I like it! I'm typically into grays, blacks, browns, and other neutral colors for clothing, shoes, makeup etc, so this works. The yellow is enough to make it bright and cheery, but it isn't too terribly bright - it's pretty pastel.

I have to say that while I like these colors, I'm really not all too impressed. I've "skipped" this month's Maven box since it's pretty expensive. They are wonderful polishes, in terms of color, but a bit thin - one coat was very sheer for me, for both colors.

That being said, I'm not entirely sure if I'll ever get more. The $20 per month price tag is a bit steep, especially since these polish bottles also hold 8 mL (.27 oz) as opposed to a typical full size bottle of polish, which is closer to 15 mL (.5 oz). They have a beautiful selection of colors, I'll give them that, but they're $14 each on the website. That's about twice the price of what I pay for most polishes, and I'm even getting half as much of the product!

If you're really into their polishes, then I suppose it's a pretty good deal. Instead of $14 each, a $20 monthly box gets you two polishes delivered to your door, perhaps with some other item each month too - mine being an apricot hand scrub this month.

I do enjoy these polishes, but the price is a bit out of my range! So while it's not my cup of tea with my current budget, you may like it! If you would like to join them, you may sign up with this link. Take the quiz, and if you don't like your results, you can always switch to a different "style!" Add whichever box you choose to your bag, and apply the code COLOR2012 to try it for a penny! I'm not sure how long this will be going on, so try it out at least. You can also cancel at any time.

Day 10: Gradient Nails

Something I was scared to do - gradient nails! I have never attempted to do a gradient before, so I figured doing it for the challenge was the way to learn.

I decided to go with blue, since I have quite a few blue polishes. I tried to pick colors that were similar enough to blend into each other well, but I didn't want colors that were too close.

As for the actual colors:

I started with a coat of Mint Condition (it's very blue, but looks more minty here). Then I put Blue Streak on a makeup sponge and dabbed it on. After that, I put Fashionista on the same sponge, and dabbed it just around the tip of each nail. I topped it all with Maisie!

For my first attempt at a sponge gradient, I think it went alright. It's a bit subtle, so maybe I'll have to choose some colors that are a bit different from each other next time.

Day 09: Rainbow Nails

Rainbow nail day! Another challenge that was incredibly fun to do. I went a bit wild with this one and used a lot of colors!

My base was China Glaze For Audrey. I just got this polish in the mail today, so I had to use it. I won the giveaway over at Pretty and Polished Pointers. I absolutely love the color - I have none like it!

As for the dots, I used a bunch of KleanColor polishes:
  • Red Alert
  • Neon Orange
  • Neon Yellow (I know, it's not very neon!)
  • Green Grass
  • Beach Blue
  • Iridescent Fuschia

As for the accent nail, I used a bunch of different Max Makeup Cherimoya nail art polishes:
  • Red
  • Neon Orange
  • Neon Yellow
  • Neon Green
  • Retro Denim
  • Luscious Lilac
I also used Ulta Snow White for the cloud.

I had a lot of fun doing this mani! It was really hard to choose between just dots, or just rainbows, so I went with both!

Day 08: Metallic Nails

So the basic color challenges are down, and onto metallic nails! I suppose this is also pretty basic, but at least metallic colors are a little more exciting.

I used one color: Pure Ice - Silver Mercedes. I have had this color for years, but I absolutely love it!

It's a pretty bright silver, so it's very light in color, unlike a metallic pewter or gunmetal. It gets a little streaky when applying it, but I suppose it's hard to hide it when it's this shiny and reflective!

I was thinking about dressing it up with some black, but I guess keeping it simple and clean is alright. Silver is a classic, but it always looks great!

Day 07: Black and White Nails

It's been a whole week with this challenge already! Today's theme is black and white, and I've been looking forward to it! I didn't really know what to do for today's nails, so I winged it, and finally got to try Valentino from Pretty and Polished!

I'm so happy with these! I know that yesterday's violet nails were my favorite from this challenge so far, but these take the cake. I can never get enough black and white.

I'm never really happy with how my nails look with just painted tips, although I'm ok with "naked" nails. My nail beds are uneven from nail to nail after being a nail biter for the better part of my grade school years, so it just looks weird to me. Because of that, I painted my nails with a neutral / nude tone, and then did the tips.

Colors used:
  • Essie - Sand Tropez
  • Pure Ice - Black Rage
  • Max Makeup Cherimoya nail art polish in White
  • Pretty and Polished - Valentino

All in all, I am so happy with how today's nails came out. I really have to keep this style in mind for future use!

Day 06: Violet Nails

Violet day! I actually like the color purple, but I don't really wear it often, nor do I own much that's purple to begin with. I have few purple polishes, and they rarely get used, so I was pretty excited to put some to use today.

I used a couple of KleanColor polishes:
  • KleanColor - Iridescent Fuschia
  • KleanColor - Sparkle Purple

I started off with a couple of coats of the Iridescent Fuschia color. Then I put purple striping tape on, and filled in the tips with the Sparkle Purple.

This was my first attempt at using any striping tape actually, and I like it! It's so much easier than I thought it would be. To get it to stay in place, I put a coat of Seche Vite over it. I put one strip across each nail, and then used my beauty scissors to nip off the excess. It worked great!

Day 06: Violet nails - success!

Day 05: Blue Nails

Today has been a wonderful day so far. I already knocked out one exam early this morning, so it left me with plenty of time to redeem myself with some decent nails! Today's theme: blue.

Very blue, indeed! I took NerdLacquer's I Think You Call Me... Sexy for a spin. It's a delightful dark blue color packed with glitter.

The polish has some silver and blue hex glitter in it, along with some smaller hexagons of the same colors. Other than that, it's filled with much smaller silver glitter, and barely a hint of red. I think it might be glitter that shines a bit red, sort of like a holo.

I used two coats, and covered it with Seche Vite. They actually have a nice glossy finish, and feel smooth to the touch. The glitter is just way too intense for my camera to capture - you just can't appreciate it properly here!

I'm really happy with this polish! As with any Nerd Lacquer, I suppose it's pretty legendary. It's full of glitter, so what's not to like?
